| just hold on to one last drink |
| Kurenai was born in Northern Queens, the oldest of three, living in a small, rather bohemian apartment. Bohemian, of course, was what her mother called it after she threw paint all over the walls and drank herself to sleep one night. "Artistic rage," she called it. She had had another fight with Kurenai's father. Her parents both considered themselves aspiring artists, and in the midst of their busy work--her father being a still-striving playwright at the age of forty, and her mother an actress who had a ferocious determination, despite never acting outside of the ensemble-- Kurenai became the bread-maker, the caretaker and the house-keeper, with assisted help from her younger siblings. Kurenai's strong will and independence came solely from her parents neglect, and she learned early on never to wait around for anyone else to do something for her; she would have to be the one to take charge. She fell into a routine of dressing her siblings, getting them to school, helping them with homework, and then rushing to do her own. Her mother, who was rarely around due to her serious work in a small group that her father managed (an acting and playwright's company that never took off--it fell bankrupt early on, leaving her parents severely in-debt, though nether of them seemed to acknowledge it. When they would, they only disagreed, and neither wanted to lose ) would come home on weekends with bottles of wine that she never took a sip of. "Presents," she used to say, "from admirers." While her mother was away and her siblings were asleep, Kurenai would dispose of the bottles once a week. She saw the alcohol as a constant reminder that her mother would return, and grew to hate it. It was not until one night, when her mother did return, that Kurenai received her first taste. She was twelve, and her mother nearly forced her to drink it, the woman already in tears from a mixture of disappointment in her newly cast ensemble role and a heavy load of alcohol from a local pub. Kurenai sipped, nearly choking on the dry liquid, but her mother would not let her stop--she continued to drink, listening to her mother sob and recite her audition, all the while noticing how light and distant her mother's voice was. The alcohol had somehow seemed to shut the woman out; it gave Kurenai her own space, her own pure, white space to think on her own, even if she could not exactly think of many things. It was a sort vacation that ended in a blackout, but Kurenai wanted it again--and soon. So it came to pass that Kurenai would drink on the weekends, while her siblings were outside and away, and while her mother was holed up inside her own room. Kurenai would sip vodka, and even disgusting things like beer, if only to relax. (Years later, Kurenai would realize that her mother--who had left the family after a series of arguments with Kurenai's father and moved to L.A.--did not receive the liquor as a present, but had instead bought it for herself, in an attempt to make herself feel better. It was almost enough to get Kurenai to stop drinking, but in the end, it only served to worsen her want for the bitter taste of alcohol on her tongue.) Kurenai moved on through school with an interest in performing arts, but would not pursue it until after, for fear of becoming like her parents; delusional, jobless, irresponsible, and, most importantly, negligent to all life around her. She would not become that. She would be a good person. After the departure of her mother, Kurenai's father simply stopped dropping in, and seemed to disappear from the world of theatre itself. At seventeen, Kurenai was working two jobs and finishing high school, achieving a diploma and never shooting for higher. Instead, she joined a theatre company as a stage hand--despite her parents' own wild ambitions, Kurenai did still love the stage, and preferred being the backbone of a show rather than out in the spotlight. At night, she attended bar tending school, and served as a barkeep at several different establishments. Jobs were scarce, but after three years of moving from one bar to another, Kurenai found a cozy deal at a small, but well-known bar in Little Italy, known for it's intimate interior and calming music. Kurenai used this money to support her siblings--her youngest, a girl, moving out at eighteen to attend Columbia University, and her other, a fine young actor, leaving to support himself on his own as a DJ and actor. Left to her own devices, Kurenai continued her work as a stage hand, soon being promoted to full stage management jobs. The role was something she fell into easily, and she liked having the responsibility again; she liked being in charge, but still only one small part of a giant project, and she liked having others to care for. She watched a handful of young actors mature into professionals, and tended to the loads that poured into her bar after a failed audition. She had drinks (many, many drinks) with fellow colleagues as well as directors, producers, and actors. Her life, while not ideal, was fine--though, deep down inside, under all of the liquor and generally pleasant outcomes, she felt that she had failed. She knew there was more for her out there. After all, it was New York City. There had to be room for just a little change. |
